    Hackers Goes for Facebook

0 leave a comment (no login required)

SINGAPORE: Right before her eyes, Julie Chiang watched the computer screen as someone used her Facebook account — pretending to be her, asking her friend for money and claiming she had been mugged in London.

"It was surreal to watch the conversation happen right in front of me," said Ms Chiang, who had been woken up in Singapore by her friend’s phone call on Friday morning.

"He told me he was on Facebook now, talking to ’me’, and I was saying I needed money to go home."

The hacker even used Ms Chiang’s husband’s name, which could be found on her Facebook profile, in the conversation.

Even as the unfolding scam began to dawn on her, a second friend living in New Zealand messaged her to say she was having the same conversation.

Reports of such incidents — known as a 419 scam — though few, are on the rise among Facebook users.

Fraudulent individuals collect log—in information through phishing sites and access Facebook accounts to send inbox or chat messages or to update the person’s profile. And they claim to be stranded in a foreign country and ask friends to send money, usually through a money transfer service.

"While the total number of people who have been impacted is small, we take any threat to security seriously and are redoubling our efforts to combat the scam," said Facebook in a blog post in September.

The scam had previously been perpetrated through emails.

But more cyber criminals are leveraging on social engineering as a means of deceiving users, said systems engineering manager Ronnie Ng from Symantec Singapore.

"Social engineering takes advantage of our natural tendency to trust one another, rather than relying solely on technological means to steal information," he said.

Indeed, Ms Leong Su—Lin, who was chatting with "Julie" yesterday morning, said the scam seemed believable because it was a "live" conversation.

"Someone was actually responding to the questions I was asking; it wasn’t an automated thing, which is why I went along with it," Ms Leong, 32, told MediaCorp from New Zealand.

"They were also hitting on a ’soft spot’ by saying she was hurt. I was very concerned, so although she sounded a bit strange, I thought maybe it’s because she was still traumatised."

But something felt amiss. "I thought it was strange she was on Facebook and not at the police station or at an embassy," she said.

Mr Ng said people need to be more aware of where they post personal information and who they allow on their social networks. In addition, online users should be careful of clicking on links from unknown senders and use up—to—date security software, he advised.

"They should also be on their guard if they receive suspicious messages from friends, such as requests for money," he said. "Users should always double—check with their friend. When in doubt, do a search on the Internet to see if it’s a known scam."

Thankfully for Ms Chiang’s friends, they did just that, and she has since reported the incident to Facebook. "I’ve not heard of this happening, so it’ll be good for more people to know about it," she said.

    The online conversation

(5:17:46 PM) Julie Chiang: Terence and I are stuck in London at the moment

(5:17:55 PM) Derrick Lim: are u there for a holiday?

    (5:18:16 PM) Julie Chiang: Vacation

(5:18:27 PM) Julie Chiang: Got mugged at gun point last night ...

(5:19:00 PM) Julie Chiang: All cash, credit card and cell were stolen off me

(5:19:11 PM) Julie Chiang: I also got injured

(5:19:19 PM) Derrick Lim: oh no ....

(5:19:45 PM) Derrick Lim: what injury?

(5:20:01 PM) Julie Chiang: Little bruises all over my neck

(5:21:45 PM) Julie Chiang: I need your help to get back home?

(5:21:57 PM) Derrick Lim: my help? ....

(5:22:38 PM) Julie Chiang: Our flight leaves in less than 3hrs from now and we’re having problem settling hotel bills

(5:23:02 PM) Julie Chiang: I need you to loan me few bucks to settle the bills and get a cab to he Airport

    (5:23:59 PM) Derrick Lim: ok

I like the way how the pictures were taken. Compare them with Singapore's Press and you'll easily know where Singapore's Press stands.

    Sleepless in Bedok

0 leave a comment (no login required)

This is Madness man! I seriously have no idea. But I'm just not able to sleep well since last Wednesday. This is so not normal. What gives? Am supposed to be preparing for a shoot at 7am. Slept like for 3 hours and mysteriously got up at 3am. Crap!

And since I couldn't get to sleep, I opened the package which Jerry Ghionis sent me. Woots! Picpockets. Ran thru them and showed my sister the samples. And I must say it's one hell of an investment. Inspiring and motivating. A total whole new meaning to what Yervant my Photo Master was explaining the other time. Will prob try some new styles later at the wedding.

Soon it was about 1 hour before the alarm rang. The mind is Wandering and Wondering. Wandering on the various bike brands for me to feast on and Wondering on who's next. Oh what the heck! I'm gonna try and cool off and compose and think again in the next few days.

    Ciao!

Not that it was that long, We just hit Ubin last Sunday anyway. HAhah! Surprisingly the chinese boy Weixuan came along XP. Venue was none other than Timbre@The Art House. Went there cos Shirlyn and gang was there. Wonderful band as always. @ 2 wonderful buddies of Loren came along. No idea what kinda stunt she was trying to pull. Anyway, it was a simple and quiet affair. I'm not complaining. Hah!

Nearly went to get my supplies...... until one night when I sat down to sort it out. Something just didn't feel right. And there came the loud exclamation. Wah Lau Eh!

    The Ugly Truth

4 leave a comment (no login required)

The trailer was good due to tons of catchy jokes but ... it turned out to be a simple show with a slow and boring beginning. Story was very much aimless or maybe a typical boy meets girl and then falls in love kinda thing. Things started to pick up in the middle with predictable story line and ended with a sweet and simple ending. Haiz! What can I say?

Funny thing ahXin said it was ok. hmmm. Weird. Maybe she didn't understand the show.

    4/10 for this flick.

I'll still prefer 2003 'Love Actually'.

    Jack Neo: Where Got Ghost?

0 leave a comment (no login required)

Filled with jokes only a local can enjoy. Can't possibly say it's better than Money No Enough due to the simple minded short stories. So there goes 1 point down.

But I'm sure you'll enjoy the twist in the story.

A 3 part mini short story featuring the usual clowns of Money No Enough, Mark Lee, Henry Thia, Jack Neo and the common Gangsters **cos I dun know their name ;) Let's just leave it as the 'Common Gansters'.

    7/10

    One word: Fantastic!!!

    Two Words: Lagi Fantastic!!! X"P

As always, Ah Xin came along. CJ again. What's new =P

Movie began with an intro I knew will end in tears. And true enough. Without any ...... just plain instrumental music, it reflected on a little boy's innocent and wonderful childhood, getting to know a soul mate and eventually getting married. Life went on till their golden age. And as all will say, "all good things must come to an end."

Classic humour. And it's definitely a must watch for all. ;)

    Easily an 8.5/10

G.I. Joe: Revenge of the Cobra

0 leave a comment (no login required)

Worst Movie Ever!!! It's better left alone as a cartoon.

Minimal damage to key installations and story was boring as hell.

    I would compare this with
Steven Seagal's Underseige. Scene with a speeding train with F117A's trailing behind, with laser beams zapping all over the place. It not only took the stealth planes out, and various countries as well. Making the excitement grow with each and every ransom demand made. Considering the fact that it was a low budgeted movie with tons of screen play instead of real damage done. It was enough to build the story up. Together with Steven's fighting, it was easily rated as 6.5/10.

Well in the case of G.I. Joe, The only thing that caught my eye was the Eiffle Tower toppling and that's about it. The overall chase...... was disappointing. Humour was a bit lame.

Maybe this isn't my kind of movie. I rate 4/10. The rest is your call. ;P

Would not have thought when they said 3D... it was actually 3D.... Like Duh! No idea why I kept thinking it was Digital. So used to Shaw Theatre's Digital effect. Anyway, we were given those 3D glasses. So no discounts on the tickets even tho it's a weekday. Take note to all. But it was a nice touch. Everything was so popping out of the sceen. HAhahh! Nice!

Definitely a must watch. It's gonna be a hilarious ride from start to end. Enjoy!

    Easily a 8.5/10.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.

    More like Half Cooked Movie........

Not really a fan of this novel. But when it comes to movies and magic, I'm all in. Well those who have read the book have said that this movie was terrible. Not until I watched it. It was okay. A bit draggy with tons of talking. The love potion segment was not necessary. That could have been the reason to make it more laughable.

Ending was a little bit dead. One will have thought that there could be more. But then again, they were probably preparing the juicy part for the next movie. Brace yourselves.

Overall, I like the feel, touch n treatment to the colours of the entire footage. It is so my kind. Will give a 6/10.

Hahaha! Just got back to the land of the lions. Half lions, half fish! Aka AQ land. Yah Happy for some!!! AQ-Phobia for the rest!

Had dinner and slept thru-out in the plane. Was totally shacked out with some clown with heavy fingers tapping on the touch screen of the entertainment system. Same concept of our locals when they are buying fruits from the fruits stall. With heavy fingers, they'll press press press. Hoping to see if it's fresh. (then leaving a mark on the fruits) Weird people!

Overall the flight was good. Spacious and good leg room. Thanks Angelina.

Touched down at 4pm and had BK and Capp at Coffee Bean.

It's about 8pm. Like most, they will touch and go. It has been a while since I last came to the Airport for a walk. So yeah! I'll be here for awhile then it's time to ciao.
